Our Head Radiographer, Petronella Samuels, recently attended the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) 29th Annual Scientific Sessions in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 4 – 7 February. She presented her work at the Technologists’ Track, entitled: “Application of Cardiac Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to Measure Myocardial Steatosis in Women with HIV on ART: A Case Report.”

She is honoured to have received the Award for Best Case in the Technologists’ Track.

The presentation focused on the use of cardiac proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-MRS) to quantify myocardial steatosis in women living with HIV receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), highlighting the clinical and research implications of advanced cardiac imaging techniques in this population.

She attended the conference alongside Prof Ntobeko Ntusi,  Dr Olukayode Aremu, and Dr Morné Kahts. Drs Aremu and Kahts also presented their respective abstracts based on cardiovascular imaging conducted at the Cape Universities Body Imaging Centre (CUBIC), led by Prof Ntusi. Their contributions further showcased the advanced cardiovascular imaging research being performed at CUBIC.

The conference provided valuable opportunities for academic exchange, networking, and engagement with international leaders in cardiovascular magnetic resonance
